A mini-split has a small outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units through a three-inch hole in the wall. Each indoor unit has its own remote and temperature, so you condition the rooms you use. Nearly all of them are heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool.

One zone or many
A single-zone system handles one room or open area. Multi-zone systems run several indoor units from one outdoor unit. For whole-house cooling in a two-story boiler home, a common layout is one unit for the main floor and one or two upstairs.
Maintenance
Rinse the washable filters monthly during heavy use and have the coils and drain professionally cleaned once a year. Neglected mini-splits lose capacity and can grow mold on the blower wheel.

Can a mini-split heat in a Minnesota winter?
Cold-climate models can, well below zero. In most homes they work alongside the existing boiler or furnace, which takes over in the deepest cold.
How long does installation take?
A single zone is usually one day. Multi-zone systems take two to three.
Are they loud?
No. Indoor units are about as loud as a quiet library, and the outdoor units are much quieter than a standard AC condenser.
Are there rebates?
