Indoor Air Quality

Minnesota homes are sealed tight for six months a year. We fix the dry air, the dust, the smoke and the stale air that come with that.

  • Whole-house humidifiers for dry winters
  • Filtration for smoke, dust and allergies
  • HRV and ERV fresh air systems

Winter air here is very dry, and heating it makes it drier: static shocks, cracked skin, nosebleeds, gaps opening in wood floors. Summers bring humidity and, in recent years, wildfire smoke. Whole-house equipment that works through your ductwork handles all of it quietly.

Common complaints we solve

  • Static shocks and dry skin all winter
  • Wood floors and trim gapping
  • Condensation or frost on windows
  • Dust right after cleaning
  • Allergies worse indoors
  • Smoke smell during wildfire season
  • Musty basement
  • Stuffy, stale air in a newer tight home

What we install and service

  • Bypass, fan-powered and steam whole-house humidifiers
  • 4 and 5 inch media filter cabinets, MERV 11 to 16
  • Whole-house air purifiers
  • HRV and ERV ventilators, new installs and repair
  • Whole-house dehumidifiers
  • Smart thermostats with humidity control
  • Humidifier pad changes and seasonal setup
  • Carbon monoxide and low-level CO monitors

Getting winter humidity right

The goal is roughly 30 to 40 percent relative humidity in winter, lower when it is bitterly cold so the windows do not frost up. A humidifier with an outdoor sensor adjusts automatically as the temperature drops.

Filtration that does not choke the furnace

Thick one-inch high-MERV filters restrict airflow and can overheat a furnace. A four or five inch media cabinet gives better filtration with less resistance, and the filter lasts six to twelve months.

Fresh air for tight houses

Minnesota's energy code requires mechanical ventilation in new homes. An HRV or ERV brings in outdoor air and recovers most of the heat from the air it exhausts. If yours has not been serviced in years, the core and filters likely need cleaning.

Questions

Indoor Air Quality FAQ

What humidity should my house be in winter?

About 30 to 40 percent, and lower during extreme cold to prevent window condensation.

Which filter should I use?

With a standard one-inch slot, MERV 8 changed every one to three months. For better filtration, have a media cabinet installed instead of forcing a restrictive one-inch filter.

Do air purifiers help with wildfire smoke?

Yes. A MERV 13 or higher media filter, with the furnace fan set to run, removes a large share of fine smoke particles.
