A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse, moving heat into the house instead of out of it. Because it moves heat instead of making it, it delivers two to three times more heat per unit of electricity than electric resistance heat. Modern cold-climate models are built to keep producing useful heat well below zero.

How dual fuel works in a Twin Cities winter
In a dual-fuel system the heat pump handles cooling in summer and heating through fall, spring and the milder parts of winter. When the outdoor temperature falls to a set point, the system switches to the gas furnace. You get the low running cost of the heat pump for most of the season and the muscle of a furnace on the coldest nights of the year.
About rebates and tax credits
Xcel Energy publishes rebates on qualifying air source and cold-climate heat pumps, and some require a participating contractor and a quality installation check. The federal 25C tax credit ended December 31, 2025, and Minnesota's state heat pump rebate has not opened yet. We quote using only incentives that are live on the day. Do heat pumps really work in Minnesota?
Cold-climate models do. Many are rated to keep heating at 13 below zero or colder. For most gas-heated homes we recommend dual fuel, so the furnace covers the deepest cold.
Will it lower my bills?
It depends on what you heat with now. Against propane, oil or electric baseboard the savings are usually large. Against natural gas the savings are smaller and depend on rates, which is why we run the numbers for your house.
Does a heat pump replace my air conditioner?
Yes. In summer it is a high-efficiency air conditioner. That is why the best time to consider one is when the AC needs replacing.
How long do they last?
Typically 12 to 17 years, similar to a central air conditioner, with annual maintenance.
