Air Conditioner Installation and Replacement

A new AC should be quieter, cheaper to run and better at pulling humidity out of the house. That only happens when it is sized and installed properly.

  • Free in-home estimate, exact written price
  • Most installs completed in one day
  • Rebate paperwork and permit handled

Central air in Minnesota works hard for about four months and sits for eight, so sizing and installation quality matter more than chasing the highest efficiency number. An oversized unit cools fast but shuts off before it removes humidity, which is why some houses feel cold and damp at the same time.

Signs it is time to replace

  • The system is 12 to 15 years old or more
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant and has a leak
  • Compressor or coil failure out of warranty
  • Upstairs never cools down
  • Loud outdoor unit
  • Humidity stays high indoors
  • Cooling bills keep rising
  • You are replacing the furnace and want a matched system

What is included

  • Cooling load calculation for the house
  • Written price with model numbers and efficiency ratings
  • Permit and inspection
  • New pad, line set or line flush, and disconnect as required
  • Matched indoor coil
  • Refrigerant charge verified by measurement, not by guess
  • Old equipment and refrigerant recovered and recycled properly
  • Warranty registration done for you

SEER2, in plain terms

SEER2 is the efficiency rating on new air conditioners. Higher is cheaper to run. For a Minnesota cooling season, the jump from a base model to a mid-tier two-stage unit usually buys more comfort and humidity control than energy savings. We show the price of each step so you can choose.

Consider a heat pump instead

A heat pump costs somewhat more than a comparable AC, cools just as well, and also heats the house efficiently in spring and fall. Paired with your furnace, it can trim winter gas use too. We will quote both if you want to compare. See heat pumps.

No ductwork?

Homes with boilers or electric heat can get cooling from ductless mini-splits with no major construction.

What affects the price of a new AC

  • Size in tons and the SEER2 rating
  • Single-stage, two-stage or variable speed
  • Whether the indoor coil and line set are replaced
  • Electrical updates
  • Ductwork corrections for rooms that never cool
  • Utility rebates on qualifying equipment

Shoe covers at the door, drop cloths under the work, old parts and boxes hauled away. The only sign we were there is that it works.

Questions

AC Installation FAQ

How long does an AC last in Minnesota?

Usually 12 to 17 years, sometimes longer, since our cooling season is short. Coils and compressors are the usual end-of-life failures.

What size AC do I need?

It depends on square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ductwork. We run a load calculation instead of matching the old unit's size.

Are there rebates on new air conditioners?

Xcel Energy publishes rebates on qualifying units, and some require a participating contractor and a quality installation check. We confirm what is current when we quote.

When is the best time to replace an AC?

Spring and fall. Schedules are open and you are not deciding in a heat wave.
